Editor's Note

The Marvilla Journal arrives each month with what's worth knowing in Marvila: events, galleries, markets and places to eat; a look at what's happening on site at Marvilla Collection; and the occasional portrait or history section about the neighbourhood itself. Issue 01 covers a May that doesn't ask you to travel far.

Here's a preview of what we'd put in your diary this month. This is a preview, and the full issue goes to subscribers only: eleven May event picks, two neighbourhood portraits, a site update from Marvilla, and fifty years of Marvila's history.

Marvila, Lisbon

Lisbon gets a particular quality in May. The Atlantic light sits lower and softer, the river smells of nothing but salt, and Marvila's old factory walls go amber in the afternoon. We've been watching this neighbourhood for a while: May is when it earns its reputation. The HUB Criativo do Beato is filling up. Underdogs is back with a strong group show. Museum Night on the 16th turns the whole of Lisbon into a reason to stay out late. Read on to get a better glimpse at what Marvila offers during May's spring days.

The anchor of Marvila's creative scene. A converted munitions factory that's part bookstore, part concert hall, part exhibition space, and the kind of place that still surprises you after multiple visits. Markets, live music, art shows and a terrace bar looking out at the river. Friday evenings bring regular samba workshops. Worth knowing if you want something to do with your feet.
